As much as I love the look of hair accessories on other people, I’ve never been a big stuff-in-my-hair kinda gal. Not only will you never catch me with a full head of barrettes à la Lizzo, but you probably won’t catch me wearing even one barrette. If my hair isn’t down (and it usually is if I’m in public) it’s in a ponytail or topknot held in place with a hair tie — and not even a cute one. Just your average black, skinny elastic band. Short of the knit-headband phase I went through in middle school and the doodads my mom would put in my hair when I was a toddler who didn’t have cogent opinions yet, I have very purposely not lived that hair accessory life. It was a curved piece of plastic about five inches long, with comb-like teeth that swept hair together from the sides and snapped it in place on one of its hinged ends to create what was essentially a ponytail that took up the entire back of your head. And it was my arch (no pun intended) nemesis.
It’s not that I didn’t want to be part of the banana clip fan club. I wanted more than anything to wear my hair like the coolest girl on TV, Alyssa Milano, often did. She made banana clips look so fashionable and so easy. But I recall hating them after attempting to wear them. And it wasn’t for lack of trying or even skill — my mom was great at doing my hair when I was a kid, and I remember having a yellow banana clip (probably because Milano wore one in that colour on Who’s the Boss?) that she definitely attempted to use on me. But I have vague yet strong memories of absolutely despising banana clips, and their absence from my many childhood photos appears to support that. & Other Stories has nailed it this season. Let’s be honest, the scandi-brand repeatedly knocks it out of the park with floaty summer dresses, pretty puff sleeve tops, structured blazers, and knitwear to boot, making it a shopping stalwart on the high street. But scrolling the brand’s ‘new in’ section my wish list instantly tripled with AW staples and Christmas party essentials. When the carefully curated fashion brand came to Regent Street in London nearly 10 years ago, I was immediately hooked. Part of the H&M group, & Other Stories offers elevated pieces that are often minimal in design but feature an interesting detail or twist – making them, and you, stand out from the crowd. It also has some of the best denim on the high street, so it should come as no surprise I’ve already added these mood cut cropped jeans to my basket.
While I usually shop the & Other Stories sale (the brand is a little more expensive than its sister brand), there’s no denying the high quality of the clothes. They say you get what you pay for, and I’ve found myself willing to pay that extra bit more for something I know will last beyond two or three wears. It’s a more sustainable way of shopping too, and that’s something we’re all trying to get better at. With Christmas party season on the horizon, & Other Stories’ sequin styles couldn’t have arrived sooner. This strappy sequin midi dress has gone straight to the top of my wish list for all-out glam, while I’m eyeing up these kick flare sequin trousers for New Year’s Eve. For something not so in-your-face, this metallic silk blend maxi dress could easily be dressed down with a structured shoulder knit jumper layered over the top.
