Apparently Perdue felt that this was an inappropriate statement to make – and this continues to build on the theme of “It doesn’t matter if things are bad: we’re going to say that our state is a great place to live because we want you to believe it, even though it’s not true”. That’s understandable, though: Georgia’s a Republican-controlled state, so it has to be an amazing place to live. Were the reality of their situation to sink in, nobody would vote for the party that’s keeping Georgia from improving on a significant number of levels.
“I am tired of hearing about being the best state in the country to do business when we are the worst state in the country to live. When you’re number 48 for mental health, when you’re number one for maternal mortality, when you have an incarceration rate that’s on the rise and wages that are on the decline, then you are not the number one place to live in the United States.”
However…we know that’s not how Perdue meant it. “Go back where you came from!” is Republican code for “You’re black, and therefore not an American”.
