As more fragrance brands experiment with refill programs, customization, and immersive experiences, Daydreams stands out not just for its totally unique modular components, but also because it’s the most fun you’ll have with what is otherwise a fairly banal perfume selection and application process. “It was really the same thing with the bags and the shoes,” Ignatova explains of the inception of the brand’s first foray into beauty, which has been in the works for three years. “First of all, we are lovers of perfume and the amazing, poetic journey it allows you to be a part of. But also we saw a gap in the market for perfumes that can become a part of your everyday life outside of your home.” The goal, she continues, was for the Daydream collection to be the first wearable and buildable perfume where every customer is part of the creation.
Ignatova’s modesty belies the innovation that she and her partners bring to their creation process, of course, and which is in no short supply with their latest category expansion. Each scent arrives in a recyclable 100 ml glass bottle that, when turned upside down and swiveled, refills a 20 ml travel bottle that doubles as a wearable charm available in six colorful shades with gold or silver detailing and a carabiner or leather strap that can be clipped onto your bag, your jeans, or anywhere else you might want to brandish the accessory.
By Far’s blockbuster success story has humble origins, according to Valentina Ignatova. “We had no background in fashion, to be honest,” Ignatova says of herself, her sister, Sabina Gyosheva, and their sister-in-law, Denitsa Bumbarova, who cofounded the Bulgaria-based brand eight years ago. “We were just passionate about fashion, and it was more about building something for us where we thought there was a gap in the market.” But there is more to the near-immediate traction experienced by the brand—which is an acronym for all three women’s sons (Filip, Alex, and Roman)—and which ignited Instagram with the novel idea of contemporary and mid-height block-heel sandals at affordable prices. “There was nothing in the middle,” Ignatova explains, noting that this kind of shoe—if it existed at all—was either very expensive or very cheap. When the trio launched bags a few years later—mini baguettes that hug close under the arm—it was much of the same instantaneous adoration. What was a hard sell to traditional buyers unfamiliar with the non-traditional silhouette, was a no-brainer to Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, and their stylists. It’s an enviable track record that one imagines will extend to the brand’s next launch: a fragrance collection called By Far Daydreams, which arrives today with seven different buildable scents.
